Give a natural shine to wood with this homemade furniture polish. Mix 2 parts olive oil with 1 part lemon juice, rub the mixture sparingly onto the wood, and rub dry with a clean cloth.

Try chalk on stains

For cheap and easy removal of greasy stains, keep a stick of old-fashioned white chalk at home. Next time you get a stain, rub the chalk on as soon as possible, let it absorb the oil, then wash as usual.

Do your bins stink?

Before you reach for the bleach to clean the bins, try a less toxic solution. Sprinkle a spoonful of bicarbonate of soda in the bottom of the bin, add hot water and a couple of drops of eucalyptus or tea tree oil. Swish around and rinse.
